Corentin en f/1.4 (2009-11-29)

J'ai déjà du mal à faire des portraits nets en f/1.8, alors en f/1.4... Et pourtant celui-ci, il me semble, est sorti super bien... Il va falloir que je m'y applique avec plus de rigueur à l'avenir, parce que je trouve le résultat magnifique...

It's hard enough to do sharp portraits in f/1.8, let alone in f/1.4... And yet this one, it seems to me, has come out real nice... I will have to revisit this with rigor in the future, because I really love the end result...

Statue de Jantje (2009-12-01)

En me promenant à travers la Haye, je suis tombé sur cette statue, illustration d'une comptine néerlandaise. Je n'ai pas trouvé de traduction Française de la comptine, il faudra vous contenter de l'Anglais!

Wandering through the Hague at sunset I stumbled upon this statue that illustrates a Dutch nursery rhyme. I found a translation somewhere online if you're interested:

At The Hague there lives a count, who calls his sonny Johnny
"Where's your daddy to be found?", he'll point it out - quite funny

Thumb and finger he will snap, wears a plume upon his cap
Clinging to a baggie, bye bye bonnie laddie!

En particulier, il présent de sympathiques tutoriaux sur divers sujets, dont en particulier celui-ci sur la photographie d'étoiles en continu. Ca donne des photos absolument magnifiques, et je sais à quoi je vais m'essayer cet été!

Dan Newton's astounding and excellent blog Liquid in Plastic presents his photographic work as well as various experiments. In particular, it includes a "How To..." section on various topics, including this one on startrail photography. The results are truly superb, and I know what I'll be trialling this summer!

Sept Péchés Capitaux (2009-12-06)

Dans le cadre de mes tentatives de photographies d'objets intéressants, j'ai essayé de prendre en photo des vieux bouquins sous différents angles. Presque totalement infructueux, à l'exception de cette photo d'un vieux recueil de romans par épisodes. Ce qui m'intéresse ici c'est l'idée d'introduire une ligne dans la composition à travers la netteté. Pas encore tout à fait réussi, mais à revisiter!

Amongst my attemps to make interesting shots with objects, I tried to shoot some old books in various ways. Mostly unsuccesful, with the exception of this shot of an old collection of serial novels. What I found interesting here was to introduce a line in the composition through sharpness. Not completely successful, but worth revisiting!

This is one of the best photos I made at the Amsterdam Klezmer Band concert back in November. This was one of those occasions where I realised how much better I needed to get at handling my camera, the Auto-Focus in particular...

Ours Musicien (2009-12-06)

Dans ma série de photos de tout ce qui traînait sur les étagères dimanche dernier, j'ai photographié ce petit ours que m'avait offert ma belle-mère il y a plus de dix ans. Une composition très simple avec un contre-jour venant par la fenêtre. Plutôt content de moi!

In my series of "shoot anything lying on the shelf" last Sunday, I photographed this little paper bear that my mother in-law offered to me over ten years ago. A very simple composition with a backlight from the open window. Pretty pleased with myself!

Lectures du Moment (2009-12-06)

Depuis cet été, je commence à lire des tonnes de magazines photos, à la recherche de conseils, d'idées ou juste de belles photos devant lesquelles m'exstasier et me dire "purée, j'ai des progrès à faire!". Dans ma série de photos d'objets Dimanche dernier je me suis dit qu'il serait amusant de refléter mes lectures photos. Une sorte de photo indirectement récursive.

This summer I started reading tons of photo magazines, fishing for advice, ideas or just good looking shots I can admire and say to myself "damn, have I got to progress!" When I did my series of still lives last Sunday I thought it would be fun to shoot my photo reading. Kind of an indirectly recursive photo.

Check This Out: Days with my Father

Un tweet d'un des photographes que je suis m'a fait découvrir la série Days with my Father de Phillip Toledano. C'est une expérience bouleversante que de suivre cette histoire en photo de l'amour d'un fils pour son père vieillissant. Les photos sont magnifiques de justesse, poignantes et d'une proximité incroyable. J'en suis ressorti très ému, et même si ce n'est pas vraiment gai, je vous le recommande très vivement...

A tweet from one of the photographers I follow made me discover the Days with my Father series by Phillip Toledano. Reading through this story in pictures of a son's love for his ageing father nearly moved me to tears. The photos are just superbly right, deeply moving and convey an incredible closeness. It's not exactly joyous, but I heartily recommend it nonetheless...

Ian & la Cigarette (2009-04-08)

Ma première séance de photo de concerts était pour aller assister au concert de Greg Szlapczynski et Ian Siegall à L'utopia. J'avais mon réflex depuis moins d'une semaine et les conditions d'éclairage du club m'ont complètement déboussolé si bien que j'ai fini par sortir le flash. Sans surprise, à l'arrivée je n'étais pas content de mes photos. Je les ai laissées moisir sur mon disque dur jusqu'à hier soir, et le ménage a été sauvage. Mais j'ai tout de même réussi à faire quelque chose que je trouve intéressant avec celle-ci, qui a finalement un look un peu "Grande Dépression" qui me plaît bien.

My first ever concert shoot was at a gig by Greg Szlapczynski and Ian Siegall at the Utopia club in Paris. I'd had my DSLR for less than a week and the lighting in the club completely stumped me, and I ended up shooting with the flash. Unsurprisingly, I wasn't pleased with my photos. They've been rotting on my hard drive until last night when I made drastic cuts. But I managed to do something I like with this one, conferring it a kind of "Great Depression" feel.

Ambiance Zen (2009-12-06)

Je me suis essayé cet après-midi à quelques natures mortes, et je trouve cette photo de vase plutôt réussie, dans une ambiance assez zen. Décidément, cet objectif Sigma 50mm f/1.4 est une merveille, même si je commence seulement à réussir à doser correctement l'ouverture pour avoir une profondeur de champ faible mais pas trop...

I tried various still life shots this after noon, and I find this vase photo quite nice, with a zen kind of atmostphere. The Sigma 50mm f/1.4 lens is truly marvelous, even if I'm only beginning to manage dosing aperture to have a short but not too short depth of field...
